On Casting

I've read a couple of interesting articles about the casting of films recently. Firstly, A casting grouch reveals the truth in The Age a couple of weeks ago (registration might be required) which reveals some (often rather frightening) casting ‘close calls’.

For example, the fact that Harvey Keitel was supposed to be the lead in Apocalypse Now (1979) is well-known. But Steve McQueen? Or Jack Nicholson? Disaster averted, but only because they said no. Tom Hanks as Lester Burnham in American Beauty (1999)? And Tom Selleck as Indiana Jones? Don't know about you, but that's enough to make me break out in a cold sweat…

In a similar vein, Empire Online did an article recently about Casting Cock-Ups which talked about ones that actually went ahead, but shouldn't have. Kevin Costner in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) is an obvious one, but there are some other good ones in there too, along with a couple that shouldn't have worked but did. A good read.
